Alchera

Alchera

There goes Denovali Records again with another high promising act. A short introduction... Heirs is a down-tempo quartet from Victoria, Australia. The band began as a solo project by Damian Coward in late 2006. Heirs expanded its line-up during 2008 and consists now of Brent Stegeman and Ian Jackson on guitars, Laura Bradfield on bass and Coward on drums. Now the time has come for their debut album and we are quite sure their dynamic landscapes will spread the world.

With "Plaug Asphyx" Heirs introduces itself with a punch to the face. The song is very noisy and busy as the metallic buzz is threatening your ears. The continuous repetition is as an purpose in itself during the song: the cyclic pattern of drums is guiding an almost never-ending rhythm. With the more down tempo song "Mockery" it is possible to breath again. Heirs proves the traditional post-rock build-up can still be used to bring a devastating effect. At the end we are facing a straight musical message again, clearly influenced by the post-rockesque sound of Red Sparowes. "Cabal" is again slower and darker, slowly shifting from a sober dark folk rhythm to an ever-intensifying noise of cymbals and distortion. Sometimes ear torturing can be a pleasant activity. In the last three songs titled "Mandril", "The White Swell" and "Russia" we can recognize the slow repetition and heavy noise from Godflesh, especially in "Mandrill". Nevertheless, Heirs can calm down again in some parts of "The White Swell" or in the mysterious end-up of "Russia".

"Heirs is the marriage of dark and light. The pain and hopelessness of addiction vs the elation of freedom" is indicated on their MySpace-page. The music of Heirs is definitely a unique marriage of different styles. Alchera combines the beauty of post-rock and the raw side of heavy metal and industrial noise. We have heard many bands who tried to walk the same way as Heirs, but probably not as right as Heirs did on Alchera.
