Eyes Set to Kill touts its originality, and though I don't think the band is exactly break ground or charting new paths, I do think it's found an original twist on the melody-vs.-mad theme. A variation on the from-sing-to-scream flavors pouring out of the metalcore world, Eyes Set to Kill put a spin on the kind of thing being done by bands such as Bullet for My Valentine and Evergreen Terrace. Only instead of straightforward post-hardcore melodic metalcore, "Reach" brings in elements of chick-fronted gothic metal. The album utilizes the same kind of dynamic as melodic metalcore/screamo, with a back-and-forth between emotive singing and screaming vox, but the melodic side of the band is tinged fairly strongly with goth metal sensibilities. The frontwoman's lovely vocals nab stinging punctuation from raging male throatwork while on the instrumental side of things the melodic metal typically rooted in emo/screamo dyanmics finds itself shuffled with cards from the gothic metal deck (the female vocals help kindle this feeling in the viewer's heart).
