split cd

This three-way-split features Cynical Bastard (Germany) Unformed (France) and Gastrick Burst (France); each band gets about twenty minutes to prove itself. The first band, Cynical Bastard, opens this disc in a very appealing way with groovy and chunky deathmetal. Cynical Bastard wields a very solid, fluent mid-tempo style ... mostly reminiscent of old school death, also some Cannibal Corpse influences are noticeable (in songs like Pure Hate and Feast of Gore). I’m fond of their sound and production as well: the guitars and the vocals sound very thick and tight. In contrast with Cynical Bastard stands the second band Unformed. The shift from slower deathmetal to faster grind is clearly noticeable. In comparison with the previous band, Unformed’s sound is rather crappy, but on itself it seems quite decent for a grind band. Unformed has the necessary characteristic shared by good grindbands: it sounds messy and chaotic but at the same time it’s both catchy and brutal. The sort of rhythms you mosh on, if you see what I mean. This band, although it has minor brutal deathmetal influences, is really something for the real grindcore lover. Not bad at all. Last band on the bill is Gastrick Burst. Musically, it keeps the middle between the two other bands, although is mostly sounds like grind because of the bad production. Even at heavy guitarriffing, it all sounds way to bright ... I don’t feel the chunkiness like I should. Luckily, the great grunting/piggy vocals and the up-tempo drums make up for that, in a way. It’s great stuff to listen to, but it probably could be more attractive with a better sound. That’s my opinion ofcourse ... right now, it’s great stuff if you call it grind, but the music seems more fit to sound like deathmetal. I strongly recommend this release to everyone who likes grind... It gives you the opportunity to get acquianted with some nice underground stuff.
