We all know the black metal genre has expanded considerably since its frosty inception. Some black metal is fast, some short. Some uber-melodic, some gnarly and abrasive. Some is exquisitely produced and some are the raw, DIY dark dreams of bedroom black metallers. Bloodline's "Hate Progression," a moody concept album, grinds along at a funereal pace or gets frisky at a mid-tempo much of the time. The sound is raw, but expansive; the production is a bit lo-fi, but it's supposed to be, and it doesn't muddy the waters. The voice - among the more stripped-down vocals I've heard in black metal - comes from the distance within the sound of Bloodline, frequently crossing the center line between scratch-and-rasp and out and out shouty, hardcore-ish by way of Satan yellings (of a sort). "Hate Progression" should be the next thing on your list if you're looking for atmoshperic underground black metal.
