Agnus Dei – The Secret (Southern Lord)

AGNUS DEI makes black metal dirty. I mean, not that it wasn’t that way from the start, but the genre has achieved wider appeal and some of the vintage bands are now cranking out the spit-and-polish, spruced-up but still black, black metal. That’s great. Dimmu Borgir has put out some awesome stuff. But what if you’re in the mood for BM that’s more akin to the bedroom metallers that were seminal in the genre’s rise? But what if you also like a spray of aural grit fritzing across your raw black metal? What if you want something that doesn’t just paint-by-numbers the style of old Mayhem or whoever? What if a tad of hard psyche turns you on, and you love sludgy noise metal and you want all this packaged with underground flavored, old school black metal? In that case I’ll tell you “The Secret.” It’s AGNUS DEI.
